Do You Remember Denver in the Summertime?

This started out as a drawing about Pictureplane, one of the founding residents of Denver's best arts space, Rhinoceropolis, a great musician and an interesting artist, but as I started pulling together imagery for the piece it became clear that it had to become something larger than just him, a whole season, a scene, a breathless sprint to the Market Street station to catch the last express bus back to Boulder in the middle of the night, covert swigs of peach schnapps in the Bar Bar parking lot, the experience of being escorted off the premises of Lakeside Amusement Park for refusing to rat out a friend who'd climbed atop the tiny train. Colorado head shop maximalism for the ravers.

Something I really appreciate about Denver is how easy it is to catch a show that's like: a hardcore band, someone playing a weird clarinet, a classic folding table noise guy, maybe some poetry, and also Pictureplane or a dance artiste of his general ilk. A special place indeed.
